Jeet Kune Do Concepts
Jeet Kune Do is the term the legendary Bruce Lee used to describe his philosophy of the martial arts. As a martial artist, Lee was far in advance of his time in both training methods and his desire not to be constrained by existing or future patterns and doctrines. He described it as "having no way as way, no limitation as limitation". Lee later regretted giving a name to his philosophy of combat, as by naming it he had in fact gone against his own non-conformist principle of martial arts.
In Jeet Kune Do Concepts we honour Lee's extraordinary martial art skill and follow teachings of the man he passed Jeet Kune Do to - his friend and student, Guro Dan Inosanto. Guro Inosanto is a modern legend in his own right and one of the world's premier martial arts Instructors, enhancing Lee's Jeet Kune Do with the Filipino Art of Kali-Silat and more recently with the disciplines of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Shoot Wrestling and Combat Submission Wrestling.
Jeet Kune Do Concepts is about working in all ranges of combat and about the principles of martial arts and combat rather than this or that technique. This means that the art can fit the student rather than the student fitting the art.
Jeet Kune Do Concepts is an eclectic martial art but we don't just grab a technique from here and there, we use mutual principles to apply to the different arts. These could be, economy of motion, directness of action or effectiveness.
What does all this mean? A direct no-nonsense way of training and of searching for your own truth in the martial arts.
Martial Arts Concepts can help you on that journey in a professional, friendly and enjoyable atmosphere through one of our tailored training programs. That is why we have divided our training schedule into three main areas of martial art, Kickboxing, Kali and Groundwork.
MAC Kickboxing
The Art
Kick boxing is one of the most popular forms of martial art today due to it's lack of formality and because it gets right down to business! Kickboxing is a great stand alone martial art and a superb platform to develop the core essentials for the other arts we offer.
What do I train?
Footwork, stance and movement. Defending and attacking with punches kicks, knees and elbows. How to punch, elbow, knee and kick singularly and in combination and clinch in a safe, controlled environment. Working with a partner to develop your timing, coordination, distance and other "tools". Great workouts that develop your cardio conditioning, fitness, flexibility and strength.
What is taught at Martial Arts Concepts?
We blend several styles creating a well rounded, effective program;
Muay Thai - This aggressive art specialises in elbows, knees & devastating kicks and is recognised as one of the most effective combat ring sports.
Western Boxing - We believe that western boxing is probably the most effective art for hands only, its use of equipment and pads to develop your hands, as "tools" is second to none. Our Group Chief Instructor is the UK's only Instructor
Jun Fan Gung Fu - Kickboxing - This is Bruce Lee's style of kickboxing, influenced by his extensive research into effective martial arts and his personal journey of discovery. Jun Fan has three phases, kickboxing, trapping and grappling. Our program introduces you to them to build your future foundation. Jun Fan has influences from Boxing, fencing and savate as well as the Chinese martial arts.
Panantukan - Filipino boxing or "dirty boxing" as it's sometimes called is not bound by "competition rules" as it comes from the battle tested Filipino art of Kali. It is centred around quick and effective destruction of your opponent and can include strikes or slaps to the eyes, neck or throat and groin areas.
Who should train?
Anyone from beginner to skilled martial artist wishing to experience our martial art can begin with MAC Kickboxing. There is a minimum age of 16 years old and a basic requirement to a minimum level of fitness but the classes will help you develop your fitness and there is no pressure to perform in the class, we train individuals not style!
Groundwork
The Art
This is a combination of Jun Fan Grappling, Combat Submission Wrestling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and influenced by wrestling (Greco Roman) Judo, and Kali's Dumog. Grappling can be an intense and physically demanding art, but also very satisfying and rewarding in your development as an all round martial artist.
What do I train?
- Position and transition on the ground.
- Chokes, locks and submissions from the ground positions.
- Movement, attacking and defending with and without strikes on the ground.
- Standing to ground.
- Ground to standing.
- Partner work and flow drills.
- Sparring on the ground.
What is taught at Martial Arts Concepts?
Combat Submission Wrestling - the art of Erik Paulson, 2 times World light heavyweight Champion. C.S.W. is a punching, kicking and takedown to submission art - a fast flowing art that is used in many mixed martial art arenas today. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu - Our lineage is directly linked to Gracie Barra via our Chief Instructor and his instructor Braulio Estima, multiple Pan American Champion and World BJJ Champion. BJJ is considered the best ground fighting system in the world that doesn't have strikes and throws. Other influences add some specific area's to the ground that we feel are necessary to enhance the game, Dumog from Kali, Jun Fan Grappling and explosive throws and holds from Judo.
Who should train?
An exciting art that should be part of any martial artist's overall training plan. We believe that there are four ranges of combat to train in and the ground would be a priority as one of those ranges. As a safe art to test yourself in, grappling can be practised by anyone.
Filipino Kali
The Art
Kali is a Filipino martial art and is over 1200 years old. It is tried and tested on the battlefield and is believed to be the art that killed Magellan's warriors when he landed in the Philippines. Kali incorporates empty hand and weaponry as well as specialised sections on dumog (grappling and moving the body), panantukan (Filipino boxing), pananjackman or sikaren (Filipino low level kicking) and flow/energy drills such as hubud and Kunsi (locks and manipulations).
What do I train?
- Footwork, Kali is based on triangles and circles for movement.
- Empty hand skills for devastating strikes, locks and takedowns.
- Energy drills to help you blend with the flow of your opponent's energy.
- Single stick, double stick, stick and dagger plus knife defence.
- Partner work for energy and tool development.
- Multiple attacks, unarmed and armed defence, for practical application.
- Ground fighting with locks and strikes.
What is taught at Martial Arts Concepts?
We practise Inosanto blend Kali as taught by the martial arts legend Guro Dan Inosanto. The blend that we teach has a strong element of knife in it and this normally signifies a higher level than empty hand skill and technique due to the range of combat. Kali has stood the test of time and evolved into a fantastic martial art that develops mental as well as physical skills. Kali philosophy is based on triangles and the highest triangle is based on, Love, Compassion and Humility. There are many areas of Kali to study and as a modern art it serves the student well as a street defence style.
Who should train?
We only teach the Kali syllabus to adults as it can be a devastating and effective martial art and needs a responsible attitude before we except a student into the class. As a highly evolved art Kali will require you to think, studying strategic levels as well as the physical in this martial art.
